Off-Season Barefoot Bliss…

There’s a delicious quiet that rolls into the Hamptons once the crowds roll out.

When the last beach umbrella folds and the final overpriced latte heads back to Manhattan, the Hamptons finally exhales and those still standing get the real prize…miles of empty shoreline, crisp salt air, and the smug satisfaction of knowing we do not need a reservation for nature.

One of the villages we explored recently was Westhampton Beach. Its charm sits somewhere between glossy and genuinely small town.

Main Street hums softly with locals, the beaches turn gold and the Atlantic looks moodier like it is brooding over summer’s excess.

Cupsogue Beach this time of year feels like your own private coastline. No coolers, no chaos, just the long stretch of sand, the crash of surf and hardcore weekend fishermen.

After throwing the tennis ball until my arm felt unhinged, as well as rustling up an appetite, we continued our pursuit of the best hot Lobster Roll.

Haskell’s Seafood Market and Cafe located on Main Street in Westhampton is a fish market as well as a cafe.

We settled in outside.

We naturally ordered the hot Lobster Roll with warm melted butter. The meat was sweet and firm. The Roll was very basic so my doggie lucked out and my carbs were contained ($38).

The Calamari were delicious ($17).

We met the former mayor of Westhampton who has done an excellent job of upgrading the infrastructure.

Hadkell’s hit the spot. The servers still seem happy to see people. The tiny cafe is the rare combo of flavor, warmth and zero pretension.

Main Street is filled with restaurants, ice cream, candy shops and retail therapy stores abound.

In the end, the off-season Hamptons are the real luxury, quiet, unhurried and gloriously free of crowds.
