Securing A Spot At The Corner Store…

They say the secret to a lasting marriage is compromise, communication and commitment.

I say it is Martinis and Caviar Lobster bites.

To celebrate our 41st anniversary, we opted for full-flavored chaos at a trendy NYC hotspot where the martinis are served with a wink, the snacks are dressed for a black-tie gala and securing a reservation is almost as satisfying as great sex.

The back story.

My daughter treats us to an annual anniversary dinner at fabulous restaurants.

The past few years we have celebrated at extremely difficult to get into places such as New York City’s #1 dining spot, Tatiana, the final curtain at Bouley, the debut of Gabriel Kreuther, L’Abeille, outrageously expensive Omakase and our 41st celebration at the impossible to get into hot spot, The Corner Store.

Once settled, our server, Val, an Olivia Munn lookalike, was steadfast in recommending the dill-infused Sour Cream & Onion Martini. This was a bold choice for me as I am a martini purist. Surprisingly, the cocktail was subtlety scrumptious served with a side of sour cream and onion chips and a reserve of the elixir. It smells like a Super Bowl party and sips like an experimental art piece ($20).

My daughter opted for the Olive Oil Martini which was  subtle, elegant and somehow moisturizing ($21).

The Appetizers a.k.a. the courtship phase included, The crispy Five Cheese Pizza Rolls stuffed with ricotta, raclette, parmesan, taleggio, mozzarella, pepperoni, ’nduja, jalapeño with ranch and Calabrian honey dipping sauces.

This is a highly touted item. Having never indulged in Totino’s pizza bites I had no basis for comparison. I was not impressed. Perhaps you need a history of drunken or stoned after midnight Totino experiences to really enjoy the Pizza Rolls ($19.95).

The Lobster Caviar Roll was a delightful mouthful. The roll was buttery as it should be, the lobster meat sweet and the heaping of caviar added the perfect contrast ($19.50).

The chilled Caesar Salad was plentiful, dressed just right and adorned with the infamous cream cheese and everything bagel croutons ($23.95).

We could not decide on the main course so we ordered the Wagyu French Dip, a 72 hour marinated Westholme Australian ribeye sandwich so indulgent it probably has a trust fund served with a bucket of steaming jus poured table side and a fabulous horseradish dipping sauce ($38.95).

We also dove into the Steak Frites, an 8oz. Demkota Ranch center cut prime New York Strip bathed in a delectable poivre sauce (48.95).

The Fries arrived at attention stacked like Lincoln Logs and were a salty, crispy delight.

My husband, the pescatarian, opted for the grilled Branzino and was quite pleased with going against the carnivore grain ($38.95).

The Finale was grand. We ordered the much hyped decadent, creamy Coconut soft serve Sundae ($18.95), mixed with caramel, adorned with ribbons of hot fudge, and big chunks of shortbread. A few bites is enough to satisfy your sweet tooth.

The biggest surprise was the Apple Pie which was sent over by Khristian, the charming manager. It was an outrageously crispy and delicious pie with a side of soft serve scooped into a dixie cup. Who knew! ($18)

The Catch Hospitality Group Corner Store could have an attitude since it is a coveted reservation.  But, no.

The staff is gracious, accommodating and lovely. Even the doorman who had to stand outside in 100 degree weather was a delight.

We enjoyed an amazingly perfect evening.

The creative takes on iconic American dishes were well presented and served with delight in a room created by the Rockwell Group that screamed NYC nostalgia.

Was the food amazing? The answer is no, but it was a helluva lot of fun.

Go IF you can get in. I won’t lie. We needed a heavy hitter to gain admittance. Thankfully, my incredible daughter is well connected.

Here’s to 41 years of food, fun and finishing each other’s desserts.

To love, laughter and ordering enough for a family of six.

To my husband, Happy Anniversary. You’re the sundae at the end of every meal and the cherry on top of this whole wild ride.
