The world is not completely awful even though it definitely seems that way.
I have been trying to change the channel on doomscrolling.
Some mornings, scrolling through the news feels like being waterboarded with pessimism.
War. Corruption. Disasters. Hungry children. The death of Medicaid. Political brawls. ICE raids. Repeat.
If aliens tuned into our broadcasts, they would assume Earth is a planet permanently on fire, run by a rotating cast of Bond villains and obscenely idiotic partisan trolls.
Bad news grabs us. We are wired to focus on threats more than warm fuzzies.
In prehistoric times, that kept us alive. In the digital age, it keeps us endlessly scrolling.
Modern media economics amplifies this with shocking headlines which equals clicks leading to revenue. Social media adds rocket fuel. Outrage goes viral. Optimism barely whispers.
Fact. Behind the noise, human progress is astonishing.
Not to be playing the role of Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, but here are a few random uplifting facts.
Extreme poverty is down. Child mortality has plummeted. Life expectancy is up. Transformative technologies abound, such as the internet, and artificial intelligence. Medical innovations are frequent occurrences. These advancements have fundamentally altered human life, extending lifespans, enabling global communication and providing the means to explore space.
Communities rise to meet crises. Heroes emerge quietly.
But good news does not trend. It does not outrage. So it slips by.
Consider flipping the script before we all go cra cra.
We need to collectively drink from our half full goblets.
