Disneyland is not the only place to proffer magic.
You can saunter into the one month old Tutto Mare in Palm Beach and be captivated…even the pathway to the unmarked entrance is enchanting.
Tutto Mare is a waterfront restaurant and bar created by Gabby Karan de Felice and Gianpaolo de Felice, the husband-and-wife duo behind the Tutto il Giorno restaurants in the Hamptons.
Gabby Karan De Felice, the daughter of iconic American fashion designer, Donna Karan, created the modern, intimate decor.
Partners in life and work, the couple founded Tutto il Giorno in 2008 with a dream of recreating the seaside dining experiences of Gianpaolo’s upbringing in Southern Italy. The group has since grown to include locations in Southampton, East Hampton, Bridgehampton, and Sag Harbor, New York.
Tutto Mare is the reimagined home of Palm Beach’s iconic Celebrity Room and the restored late 1950s mural ‘Venetian Festival’ by New York artist Robert Bushnell, featuring caricatures of over 100 actors and celebrities of the time.
The restaurant is elegantly streamlined and sophisticated, even offering a retail therapy opportunity amongst a tranquil setting.
We were fortunate to snag an outdoor banquette at sunset and that’s when the magic began. We started with cocktails, indulging in a stellar Aperol Spritz ($24) and Negroni/Monkey 47 ($29).
Our first course was a fabulous Frito Misto. This is where things became joyful. Lightly fried, golden, and mercifully not greasy, the Fritto Misto delivers that perfect crunch-to-tender ratio that separates the amateurs from the Italians. The seafood is delicate, the batter is whisper-thin, and everything tastes clean and fresh not like it has been lingering too long in hot oil. A squeeze of lemon, a dip, and suddenly you are transported to the Amalfi Coast ($39).
In a sea of ordinary salads and overdone Caesars let me introduce you to the Gabriella Salad with radicchio, endive, arugula, avocado, Parmesan, and crunchy pistachios. This salad understands its assignment. Fresh, crisp greens with bright notes and the kind of starter that makes you feel smugly virtuous right before ordering pasta ($32).
Our main course was Paccheri Pasta with Maine lobster and scampi, in a fabulous red cioppino sauce. The lobster meat which was served in the shell was sweet and tender. This dish arrives with confidence and earns it. Generous chunks of lobster, properly cooked pasta, and a sauce that tastes like the Mediterranean showed up dressed for dinner. Rich, but balanced, indulgent without being heavy-handed, it’s exactly what lobster pasta should be when it knows it is the star attraction ($75).
The evening’s featured dessert, Millefoglie, provided the perfect ending with crispy, flaky layers, fresh, tasty berries and a wonderful cream adornment. Millefoglie is the more rustic Italian version of Mille-feuille, the iconic French dessert ($18).
A highlight of the evening besides the delectably creative coastal Mediterranean cuisine overseen and executed by executive chef Agostino Petrosino and chef de cuisine Carmine Nozzolino, was the view from our comfy banquette. The ever evolving evening sky transitioned from dusk to sunset to nightfall.
Kudos to the beyond friendly and highly capable staff and our lovely Ukrainian server, Daria, to the charming host, the impressive, affable manager Devin Hekkema and the adorably accommodating outdoor heater igniters.
Located in the posh Royal Poinciana Plaza, Tutto Mare leans into coastal Italian elegance with a light-filled, breezy, and upscale ambiance (and prices!) to make you sit up straighter without wondering whether you are under-yachted.
The food is deliciously thoughtful, the execution clean, the environment top notch and the menu understands that elegance does not require theatrics.
