I often revisit restaurants, although I do not make a habit of reviewing them a second time.
I am compelled to, once again, comment on 53.
I recently celebrated my daughter’s birthday at 53 since she had not yet dined there.
53 is a sleek bi-level stunner of a restaurant in Midtown next to the Museum of Modern Art. It is from the same group behind New York’s Marea, with a kitchen led by acclaimed chef and partner Akmal Anuar.
The cuisine is marvelous. The amazingly thoughtful and generous assistant GM, Ronnie Quinn, who greatly enhanced our dining experience, is a gift that keeps on giving, a bright light in a rather dubious world right now.
Enough banter. Let’s do a deep dive into the modern Asian influenced cuisine.
After a champagne toast for the birthday girl we commenced our Asian influenced culinary journey with one of our favorites, Oyster & Uni with yuzu, ponzu gelée, and trout roe…fabulosity ($38).
The Crispy Squid was blissful. I rarely indulge in fried food, but this was light, fresh and delicious with a touch of chili and a tantalizing dipping sauce ($28).
The Yellowtail was sweet and tender enhanced by Ikura, citrus, and sorrel ($32).
We indulged in the rich and plentiful Salmon Carpaccio accessorized with sesame, shiso and kombu ($34).
The Royal Shumai was absolutely tantalizing filled with luscious lobster and a generous dollop of Kaluga caviar, a sumptuous treat ($29).
The King Prawn was terrific with sumac and black pepper ($48).
53 53 West 53rd Street New York City. Open for dinner daily 5-10pm. Lunch Monday-Friday 11:45am-2:30pm. Sunday Brunch 12-3pm.
