Today’s Fancy Free Friday is all about major milestones achieved this week.
The November 3, 2026 midterm elections produced an unusually large number of historic firsts, particularly for women.
Let’s kick off this memorable week with Keisha Lance Bottoms who was elected governor of Georgia. She is the first black woman elected governor in United States history.
The front page of Wednesday’s Atlanta Journal Constitution declared Bottom’s victory along with the following revelation. “In 1860 an enslaved man named Sheppard Peek was listed among the possessions of William Peek, a white man in Crawfordville. His value was placed at $1,400. On another surviving document, Sheppard signed his name with an X. More than a century and a half later, Sheppard’s great-great-granddaughter, Keisha Lance Bottoms, is Georgia’s governor-elect.”
Talk about historic!
In New Mexico, Deb Haaland is the first Native American woman elected governor in U.S. history.
In Minnesota, Peggy Flanagan is the first Native American woman elected to the U.S. Senate.
In Colorado, Melat Kiros is the first Gen Z woman elected to Congress.
In Illinois Juliana Stratton’s victory means that Illinois will become the first state represented by two women of color in the U.S. Senate, alongside Tammy Duckworth.
In Texas, Gina Hinojosa is the first Latina governor.
In Ohio, Amy Acton is that state’s first woman governor.
In Michigan, Jocelyn Benson and Winnie Brinks are the first all-female governor and lieutenant governor ticket elected.
In South Carolina, Annie Andrews is the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate from South Carolina.
There are more firsts. This is a great noteworthy start.
What immediately comes to mind is, I am WOMAN hear me roar! Rest assured that these amazing women will govern and serve with an even, compassionate hand.
Congratulations and enjoy your Fancy Free Friday.
Hope has been resurrected. Onward…
