Do You Believe In Magic…

For the birthday record, I would like it noted that I married well and raised an exceptional daughter.

Not billionaire-well. Better.

The kind of job well done where your husband and daughter quietly conspire to create a day so thoughtful and perfectly executed that even your inner critic has nothing to complain about.

The day began with bagels and lox on a gorgeous spring morning. Sunshine, coffee, family, and the rare luxury of having absolutely nowhere to be except exactly where I was.

Then the gift giving commenced and the generosity and fabulosity blew my mind.

This was followed by my amazing daughter whisking me off to Shou Sugi Ban House in Water Mill, New York where tranquility is apparently a full-time occupation.

A spa day encompassing an unbelievably wonderful massage and a superb three-course lunch prepared by chef extraordinaire, Patrick O Grady, with a hospitality assist from his life partner and Shou Sugi Ban House Head of Hospitality, Carolyn Boyce.

All this amongst peaceful surroundings, and a few blissful hours during which no one asked me to make a decision, just relax and indulge in fab food.

My daughter deserves special recognition here. Her event planning skills are frighteningly good. Every detail was thoughtfully considered, and her gift selection was so spot on it felt as though she had been secretly reading my mind for months.

If there is an Olympic event for thoughtful daughters, she is bringing home the gold, along with a medal performance from my generous, considerate husband.

The evening ended at Tutto il Giorno in Sag Harbor with wonderful food, laughter, and the kind of conversation that reminds you what really matters.

As I’ve grown older, I’ve discovered that the best birthdays aren’t about extravagance, although I would never shun extravagance. They are about feeling loved, appreciated, and surrounded by people who know exactly how to make you smile.

Mission accomplished.

Thank you, David and Courtny, for a perfect day. I am one very lucky woman.
