Fashionably unfashionable?
Can someone please help me understand the current warm weather fashion trend of microscopic shorts paired with heavy boots?
From where I am standing, comfortably in my running shoes with my forever orthotics, in clothing allowing normal circulation, it appears many have collectively dressed for two entirely different seasons at once.
Everywhere I look, young women are strolling around Manhattan wearing what can only be described as denim optimism, along with satin and silk lace boxers that look like fancy pjs with knee-high motorcycle boots that suggest they may also be preparing to invade Cuba.
Tiny shorts.
Massive boots.
It’s as if Daisy Duke and a Civil War reenactor had a baby.
At a certain point in life, simply choosing discomfort in the name of aesthetics becomes a distinct fashion chose.
Your thighs are at the beach.
Your calves are hiking through the Amazon.
Fashion no longer appears interested in coherence. Modern style is about vibe, contradiction, and the confidence to leave the house looking intentionally perplexing. Somewhere along the line we abandoned matching weather to clothing and embraced what I can only describe as seasonal chaos.
Cashmere bralettes.
Shearling in April.
Wool beanies in July and August.
Chanel type flats in February with wool pants and no socks.
I admire commitment to fashion. Truly. When I first moved to Los Angeles everyone was wearing denim mini skirts with pink fur lined Uggs in 100 degree weather.
Of course, every generation has fashion trends older people fail to understand. My parents questioned ripped jeans, low-rise Landlubber pants, and anything involving shoulder pads.
And to be fair, the young women wearing these outfits look fantastic. Confident. Effortless. Slightly intimidating. The kind of confidence that comes from having functioning knees and hips and no lower back flare ups.
Meanwhile, if I wear the wrong shoes, I need a recovery day, 3 extra strength Advil and an aggressive message.
Fashion, after all, has always involved suffering.
