Larping is used to call out someone who is perceived as inauthentic, a poser. While the term traditionally stands for live-action role-playing, Gen Z has repurposed it to describe performative behavior where someone acts or dresses in a way that does not resonate with their true identity.
Poser being my favorite, but we did use Fake. Inauthentic, Performative. All these worked for me for numerous decades.
2026 and it is all about your social media presence, pretending to have more wealth or more exotic travel plans than these kiddos actually possess.
Larping can also be applied to specific lifestyle trends, such as dressing for a Pilates class merely for the social media photos rather than the activity itself and departing before partaking.
Authentic movements used to inspire slang. Now it is all about social media impressions.
For a multitude of reasons I am so thankful that social media was not yet hatched in the 80s and the mainstream boom did not kick off until 2003.
From a public relation’s perspective, most of my clients would be in jail and I would be out of business.
Sadly, I would be forced to buy Coach instead of Chanel.
