Rain on a Sunday in September. Indoors on what should have been a summer/early fall weekend should impart bad vibes.
But not when the Yankees are playing the Mets, American tennis player Ben Shelton is trying to become the first American man to win the U.S. Open in 23 years, the NFL season is beginning, and my New York Giants are opening under the lights on Sunday Night Football.
Deep breaths.
The day began with a 9:00 a.m. trip to Costco, where I quickly discovered that nearly everything we routinely buy had increased by two or three dollars in just the past two weeks. Gas had jumped 75 cents a gallon.
Holy crap. Thanks to the deranged, obese, sleepy sociopath.
If Costco’s prices are frightening, imagine the harsh reality waiting at Whole Foods, Stop & Shop and Publix. Even Trader Joe’s, the place that once made us feel financially clever for buying Scandinavian Swimmers and cauliflower gnocchi, has raised its prices.
After Costco, I swam laps in the rain. There is something wonderfully dramatic about swimming outdoors during a downpour. It makes you feel resilient and cinematic, even when you are a post menopausal woman trying to defy gravity.
Then I settled in for the holy trinity of tennis, baseball and football.
Sadly, Ben Shelton fell to the profoundly annoying Alexander Zverev, who bounced the ball approximately 17 to 20 times before every serve. By Zverev’s third service game, I was ready to reach through the television with a pair of scissors, remove those long locks and see whether, like Samson, his strength might dissipate without them.
The Yankees restored some order to the universe by beating the Mets, thanks in no small part to their outstanding pitcher, Cam Schlittler.
And now, as darkness settles over this muggy September Sunday, I prepare to confront the deepest and most persistent of my sporting neuroses, The New York Giants.
The game has not even started, and I am already questioning the offensive line, the play-calling and anxiously awaiting a glimpse of greatness from the realigned defense. Be still my heart…Burns, Edmunds, Carter and Reese.
Deep breaths.
Being a Giants fan is not really entertainment. It is group therapy with commercials.
Update…It is midnight and the NY Giants just beat the Dallas Cowboys for the first time on opening day since September 12th, 2016 and the NY Giants started the season with a win for just the second time in 10 years.
Giants win, Yankees win. It’s a great day in the neighborhood
