She’s Back…NYC Restaurant Review

Proud  Mary.

She’s back and just as delectable.

We strolled in mid-afternoon on a Monday and easily secured a table at the usually packed restaurant.

Mary’s Fish Camp originally opened in 2001 by Mary Redding. The iconic spot closed in 2024 due to real estate issues.

The restaurant made a triumphant return on July 31st about 6 blocks from the original location to a space on Hudson and Jane Street in the West Village.

Retaining much of its original kitchen crew and service staff, the charming venue channels the fish camps of Florida and creates a cozy, casual New England fish shack, featuring chalkboard specials, a lively atmosphere, and an open kitchen.

I enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and honestly everything was delicious.

We started with juicy, sweet, incredibly fresh Canadian Steamers with drawn butter. The clams are not inexpensive, but they are first rate ($27).

The Fried Oysters and Clams were meaty, sweet and lightly fried. The homemade tartar sauce was outrageously delectable…just eat on its own ($22).

The Shaved Brussels Sprout Salad with Toasted Almonds, Mint and Pecorino was exceptional. I could eat the salad every day ($18).

The Grilled Shrimp Burger with Sambal Lime Aioli, Daikon Slaw, and Taro Chips was wonderful ($30).

The Shoestring Fries were crisp and addictive ($12).

In addition to the Daily Chalkboard Specials the mains include a whole Grilled Fish, Grilled Shrimp Tacos ($30) Portuguese Sardine Banh Mi ($28), Ipswich Fried Clam Roll ($28), Lobster Roll ($55) and Seasonal Vegetables.

The desserts are magical. The iconic Hot Fudge Sundae is the real thing with Madagascar vanilla bean ice cream (from Il Laboratorio del Gelato), thick Belgian dark chocolate hot fudge that hardens slightly against the glass, whipped cream, and a chunk of peanut brittle for a salty crunch (mini $12, full size $17).

We could not decide between the sundae and the real Butterscotch Pudding so our lovely server ordered us mini versions.

I really enjoyed a classic seafood lunch. Damn the calories, I savored every bite.

Welcone back, Mary’s Fish Camp. You were missed.

Mary’s Fish Camp 626 Hudson Street West Village New York City. Open Monday-Saturday 11am-10pm, Sunday 11am-5pm. Reservations on Resy.
