Sunset Satisfaction…New York Restaurant Review

Dreaming about summer on the French or Italian Riviera?

Me, too, but between prohibitive flight costs, unbelievably long passport control  lines and nightmare airport delays, I have a great alternative.

Head to the Hamptons and take a 10 minute ferry (no reservations accepted, cash only, just get in line) from Sag Harbor or the North Fork and spend a day or the weekend at the Sunset Beach Hotel on Shelter Island.

Known for its natural beauty, rural character, and peaceful atmosphere, Shelter Island is a popular retreat with lovely beaches.

Today, I am all about the ambiance and wonderful food at the Sunset Beach Restaurant.

Meals are served in the comfortable dining area or the open-air top deck, built within a majestic tree.
I must say I was astounded by how delicious the food was. The restaurant serves seasonal fruits and vegetables from organic farmers and sourced seafood from local day boat fishermen.

The location across from Crescent Beach with views of Peconic Bay, the colors reminiscent of St Tropez, the multitude of nooks and crannies to sip an adult beverage are numerous and tremendously appealing.

The staff is gracious and we fell in love with the authentic Frenchman, Benjamin Vasher.

We started off the meal with an Aperol Spritz ($24).

Soon the perfectly prepared Calamari arrived, accompanied by a lovely aioli dipping sauce ($35).

Believe it or not the Butter Lettuce Salad with fried shallots was outstanding and the creamy French vinaigrette dressing motivated me to whip up a jar the following day ($27).

The fresh Steamed Mussels in a light white wine broth with a side of crispy, delicious French Fries were outstanding and ample enough to share ($40).

My husband ordered the Tempura Monkfish with a crispy, flaky crust enveloping the tender, flavorful monkfish which parallels lobster in taste ($47).

The pre-birthday dessert, a scrumptious rich, thick, not too sweet Chocolate Mousse, was outrageous. Even the strawberry was outstanding ($18)

There is a bocci ball court outside the restaurant, swings to relax on while sipping a beverage and views to ogle.

I cannot tell you what a thoroughly pleasant day we spent on Shelter Island despite the less than perfect holiday weekend weather.
