Let’s Do the Time Warp.
There was a time when fishnets, heavy eyeliner and questionable decisions constituted a Saturday night.
Now a questionable decision is having coffee after four which makes The Rocky Horror Show a rather welcome reminder that growing older doesn’t require becoming respectable.
Richard O’Brien’s musical is back on Broadway at Studio 54, directed by Tony Award-winning director Sam Pinkleton, of Oh, Mary! fame.
Studio 54 is an appropriate address for a show in which restraint has never been invited to the party.
The premise is gloriously ridiculous. A wholesome couple, Brad and Janet, encounter Dr. Frank-N-Furter, whose approach to hospitality makes a disappointing Airbnb look positively reassuring.
There is sexual experimentation, science fiction and a spectacular shortage of sensible clothing.
Nobody comes to Rocky Horror for a plausible plot. You come for the music, the camp and the opportunity to spend an evening among a carefree crowd devoid of politics and diesel fuel chatter.
The challenge for a Broadway revival is that Rocky Horror arrives with an audience’s memories attached.
Can polished theatre capture the unruly pleasure of a cult phenomenon?
This is live theatre. Roundabout welcomes the tradition of audience participation, but asks people to choose their call-outs carefully. Buying a ticket does not automatically make you the understudy. There were a plethora of one liners shouted out by dedicated audience members. Show narrator, Rachel Dratch, handled the unpredictable nightly audience call-outs with aplomb.
What gives Rocky Horror its staying power is its affection for people who don’t fit neatly into the approved categories. Beneath the lingerie and lunacy is an invitation to loosen up, experiment and stop apologizing for taking up space.
That invitation ages rather well.
The fishnets? Entirely your business.
I left my youthful glam rock outfit at home and wore comfortable shoes, kept my midriff under wraps and thoroughly enjoyed a wild and wacky 1 hour 50 minute interlude.
Buy your tickets soon and enjoy an evening at the Rocky Horror Show before the final curtain falls on February 28th, 2027.
